This class will be held near Chelsea, Michigan. In this hands-on workshop we will work as a group to make ollas out of clay pots and build the rest of the system components to create a gravity-fed irrigation system. I will provide the tools, expertise, caulk, and irrigation system components, and you will provide your own buckets and unglazed pots. We will, as a group, assemble ollas, prepare water regulator buckets, have some lunch, and then do an installation. The fee for the workshop will be $40 and will include lunch and the following items for you to construct your own olla irrigation system:
1-Float Valve, 100’ of ¼” irrigation tubing, 1-Dishwasher Elbow, 1-piece of 3/8” copper tubing, 20-straight hose barb fittings, 30-tee hose barb fittings, 25-tubing plugs, and 20-2 hole rubber plugs.
YOU WILL NEED TO BRING A PLASTIC 5-GALLON BUCKET AND LID, AND AS MANY (matching) PAIRS OF UNGLAZED CLAY POTS AS YOU NEED TO MAKE UP TO 20 OLLA CAPSULES. I will have the tools there to not only construct ollas, but if you want to make your own rain barrel out of a trash can we can get the holes drilled so that you’re prepped and ready to go, and I can show you how to make an inexpensive bulkhead fitting for the barrel.
We are planning on having my celebrated vegetable lasagna (vegetarian, not vegan) for lunch as part of the $40 fee, but you will need to bring your own refreshments.
If you’d like to see a write-up of my olla experiments to date, please take a look at the following web site where I’ve posted a file which contains the information. Please make it a point to read the information prior to the workshop.
I've used and refined this system for about a year. It greatly increased the yield from my garden and reduced the amount of labor for watering and weeding.
